I believe that zazen is the art of getting to know people and the world.
For example, There is an approach in science that investigates the evolution of living organisms by observing the phenomenon of heredity. By comparing the genetic characteristics of various creatures with those of humans, we can gain a clearer understanding of the position of the human creature. And, as a result of our investigation, we know where we are.
The approach of science can be said to be a dynamic that works in such a direction, moving more clearly toward what is called truth, and at the same time, more clearly realizing that I am in what is called truth.
For example, There is the zazen approach of investigating the self by observing oneself and the real world.
By comparing one's own physical sensations and unconscious impulses with the various events of the real world around us, we can gain a clearer understanding of where we stand in our existence.
As a result of this investigation, we come to know where we are.
The approach of zazen can be said to be a dynamic that works in this direction, moving more clearly toward what is called buddhahood, and at the same time more clearly realizing that I am within what is called buddhahood.
I know that truth, which I investigate with the scientific approach, is all manifested in reality.
I know that the Buddha nature, which I investigate through the approach of zazen, is all manifested in reality.
At the same time, it becomes clear to me once again that reality continues to be reality as it is, whether I know it or not.
I am astonished at how little we humans are able to perceive, but I am also greatly relieved by the fact that I exist, undeniably embedded in reality at this very moment.
That security sets me free. And I live freely. Tosei Shinabe
